What is a Bengal Cat?

The Bengal Cat is a hybrid of the Asian Leopard and Domestic Tabby. To qualify as a Bengal Cat, according to TICA and other organizations, the Bengal must be AT LEAST a fourth generation cat, which holds the qualities of the beautiful and wild-looking ALC, but the temperament of a domestic pet. This hybrid combination has become a great genetic match, as Bengals have been known to have bred out many genetic health risks, and have maintained a healthy breed.

What make a Bengal Cat different?

Aside from their obvious beauty, Bengals are very high energy and active cats. They love high places and often prefer moving water to still water... some Bengals even enjoy playing in water or going for a swim!

Are Bengal Cats Wild?

No. While ancestors to the Bengal Cat are both, Asian Leopard Cat, and Domestic Tabby, Bengals have been bred as pets, and are officially classified as domestic pets by all American Wildlife Associations.

What is a "Foundation Bengal/F-1, F-2, F-3"?

The Foundation Bengal is within the first 3 generations of the Asian Leopard Cat. When it comes to the F1-F3, the F stands for Filal, which in genetics, means "of or relating to a generation or the sequence of generations following the parental generation." (See the chart below) Due to its close lineage to the wild, it is often leery and cautious when introduced to a new situation. They do not adapt well to variations within everyday life. Foundation cats often do not bond to people, but if they do, it is usually intense, and must be life long and stable, for the well being of the cat. The Foundation Bengal is not predisposed to human socialization, and are typically shy. They need a secure, quiet place to be alone, when they feel overwhelmed. Every Foundation Bengal is different, and they can make wonderful pets to the right home, but this home must operate on the cat's terms, with limited changes to daily life.

What is a "SBT Bengal?"

"SBT Bengal," standing for "Studbook Tradition Bengal," is considered a fully accepted domestic cat, according to The International Cat Association, and is eligible to complete as a show cat. In order to qualify as an SBT Bengal, the cat must be a minimum of 4 generations (F-4 or higher) away from wild. An SBT Bengal is a very social cat, which can fit into any loving household. It's needs are similar to any domestic cat, but has the amazing Bengal personality, which is often characterized as more dog-like. SBT Bengals are very athletic. They want to be a part of the action, and do not like to be alone. They enjoy a stimulating environment, and adapt well to daily life. They enjoy human interaction, as well as other animals, and they thrive in pairs.

Are Bengal Cats related to the Bengal Tiger?

No. Bengal Cats and the Bengal Tiger have no direct genetic relation, and are linked by name only.
